Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue has just concluded his official visit to Hungary and the United Kingdom. The visit marks an important milestone in the development path of the Vietnam-Hungary comprehensive partnership and the Vietnam-UK strategic partnership, providing new momentum for cooperation between Vietnam and European partners in all fields.
 
As an important activity towards the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Vietnam and the UK in 2023 and creating the foundation to promote relations between the Vietnamese and Hungarian parliaments in a more substantive and effective manner in a new period, the working trip by National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue helps to deepen the Vietnam-Hungary and Vietnam-UK relations and foster cooperation for recovery and growth together in the post-pandemic period.

Bright prospects of cooperation between Vietnam and Hungary

In a sincere and open atmosphere of the talks between National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and Hungarian National Assembly Speaker László Kövér, the two sides emphasised that Vietnam and Hungary have a time-honoured friendship and multi-faceted cooperation relationship with a history of more than 70 years, sharing many similarities and values, despite geographical distance. This is an important foundation for deepening the friendship and multi-faceted cooperation between the two sides.

The two parliamentary leaders were engaged in extensive discussions on various issues in bilateral relations, especially parliamentary cooperation and cooperation between the two sides at international and regional mechanisms. The two sides agreed to maintain collaboration and support each other at multilateral parliamentary forums as well as to maintain high-level delegation exchanges, specialist committees and parliamentary friendship groups to share information and experience in parliamentary operations, coordinate and support each other at multilateral forums. 

The two leaders signed an agreement on cooperation between the two NAs in the next period with deeper and more extensive contents that are suitable for the new context and situation. Under the deal, both sides will work together to organise a seminar on improving the legal framework on greenhouse gas emission reduction, renewable energy and green economy.

 

At the meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, NA Chairman Hue and Hungarian PM agreed on the commitment to develop two-way trade in a "balanced manner" while creating favourable conditions for each other's products and services to access the other market, and encourage businesses of the two countries to invest in the other country for the interest of the peoples of both sides.

NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue affirmed that the National Assembly of Vietnam strongly supports and creates favourable conditions for the realisation of cooperation programmes between the two Governments.

Within the framework of the visit, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue had meetings with the Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian parliament, the President of the Hungary-Vietnam Friendship Association, and representatives from the Vietnamese entrepreneur community in Europe. He also attended the Vietnam - Hungary Education Cooperation Forum and the Hungary-Vietnam dialogue on economic, trade and investment cooperation.

As part of his busy schedule, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue visited the Vietnamese Embassy and met with Vietnamese people living in Hungary. The Vietnamese top legislator expressed his thanks for the Overseas Vietnamese (OVs) community in Hungary, along with OV communities in general, for their support to their homeland, especially during the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue’s visit is an opportunity for senior leaders of Vietnam and Hungary to reaffirm their political commitments in continuing to promote the bilateral partnership, contributing to the economic recovery and sustainable development in each country after COVID-19, while strengthening collaboration in global issues such as climate change.

National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue affirmed that the Party and State always pay attention to and consider the overseas Vietnamese community as an integral part, a resource of the ethnic community and an important factor contributing to strengthening the cooperation and friendship between Vietnam and other countries. He highly appreciated the Vietnamese community in Hungary for always uniting and supporting each other, preserving and promoting national cultural identity and affirming its position in the intellectual ranks of Hungary.

At meetings with Hungarian leaders, the National Assembly Chairman proposed that the Hungarian Government continue to create favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live and work stably, contributing to the construction of the host country and towards building and developing their fatherland.

Bringing Vietnam-UK relations to new heights

The official visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland by National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue is the first visit of the Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam to the UK after 11 years. The visit aims to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2023, maintain the exchange of high-ranking delegations between the two countries and the two parliaments, strengthen political trust and boost cooperation between the Vietnamese National Assembly and the UK Parliame

Over a period of nearly three days, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue’s visit featured a busy schedule with a wide range of activities related to parliament and government, spanning many fields such as economics, business, finance, trade, investment, education, community activities, etc.

During a meeting with Speaker of the UK’s House of Commons Lindsay Hoyle, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue discussed many issues in cooperation between the National Assembly of Vietnam and the UK's House of Commons as well as in bilateral relations, cooperation in multilateral forums, and regional and international issues of common concern.

Expressing great importance to the bilateral cooperation, the two leaders discussed measures to further strengthen the Vietnam-UK Strategic Partnership, including the importance of promoting the role of the two parliaments. Regarding economic terms, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue suggested the two sides continue to implement the UK-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (UKVFTA) to create conditions for British businesses to expand investment in Vietnam. The two leaders also exchanged directions to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the fields of education, health, science and technology, and climate change adaptation.

The two sides highly appreciated the cooperation between the two countries at multilateral mechanisms. The Speaker of the House of Commons emphasised that there are MPs in the British Parliament who always support Vietnam as friends, including those who have an important role and voice in the European Parliament (EP). This acts as an important bridge between Vietnam and the EP.

On the occasion, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue expressed his thanks to the UK Government, Parliament and people for creating favourable conditions in which for the Vietnamese community to live and integrate while contributing to the local economy and society; while at the same time, always looking towards building the Vietnamese homeland. The Speaker of the UK's House of Commons agreed that Vietnamese people and Vietnamese students are a very important bridge between the two countries.

During talks with Speaker of the UK House of Lords John Francis McFall, the two sides discussed the situation of relations between the two countries and the two Parliaments, with the hope that Vietnam and the UK, especially the Parliaments of the two countries, would come to a consensus with new orientations and solutions to deepen the bilateral cooperation in all fields, with many new opportunities and challenges, aiming to raise the level of cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides agreed to maintain dialogue and exchange delegations and contacts at all levels. In particular, the parliaments of the two countries need to promote their roles and support the implementation of activities that have benefits for both sides and the people of the two countries.

One of the highlights of the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation’s visit to the UK was the UK-Vietnam high-level forum on economy and trade. This is an important event to promote bilateral economic, investment and trade cooperation. Speaking at the forum, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh affirmed that the Vietnam-UK strategic partnership has made important strides, contributing to the socio-economic development results of each country. 

Secretary of State for International Trade of UK Anne Marie Trevelyan affirmed that the UK attaches great importance to cooperation with Vietnam, saying that: “Vietnam is the most typical example of how Southeast Asian countries would be the growth engine for the global economy. According to our analysis, by the end of this decade, Vietnam will be among the 30 largest economies in the world. Trade relations with Vietnam are playing a very important role in the UK’s trade policy.”

At the forum, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue directly answered questions from UK delegates and enterprises. On the occasion, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh, and other delegates witnessed the exchange of cooperation agreements between Vietnamese and UK businesses and localities.

Within the framework of his visit, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue laid flowers at the plaque of President Ho Chi Minh in London, visited the Vietnamese Embassy and met the Vietnamese community in the UK, in addition to receiving leaders of several UK corporations and Chairman of Vietnam-UK Network.

In the context of strong development of bilateral relations and the UK’s commitment to enhancing its presence in Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asia, the visit made by NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue and the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation made an important significance in further promoting and deepening the Vietnam-UK strategic partnership
said Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK Nguyen Hoang Long.

The great achievements from the official visits made by NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue to Hungary and the UK are an important foundation for consolidating and deepening the Vietnam-Hungary Comprehensive Partnership and the Vietnam – UK Strategic Partnership, especially when the countries have been boosting socio-economic development in the post-COVID-19 pandemic while contributing to building “solid bridges’ connecting Asia and Europe.
