APPLIES DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION TO SPEED UP TOURISM DEVELOPMENT
In order to meet the new tourism situation, Quang Ninh Province’s hospitality sector has exerted efforts to apply digital transformation to boost its recovery process after the COVID-19 pandemic with the launch of many smart tourism products to enhance tourist experiences. This has helped to create a momentum to boost tourism growth and turn tourism into a key economic sector of the province.
TOURISM IN BORDER AREAS CHANGES THANKS TO DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
“Two years ago, my friends and I chose a homestay in Binh Lieu that was very cute, clean and friendly. We found this homestay through Facebook when looking for accommodation information for the trip,” Khanh Linh, a visitor from Dong Da District in Hanoi, shared about her trip to Quang Ninh’s Binh Lieu District in 2021.
In recent years, tourists who are interested in exploring the beauty of the Binh Lieu border area have been able to easily search for destinations and accommodations through many information channels such as websites and social networks. Applying digital technology has encouraged many local people in the border areas of Binh Lieu to provide tourism services to visitors.
With a series of Facebook accounts such as Phuot Binh Lieu with 3,600 likes and 3,800 followers, and Homestay Hoang San with 1,200 followers, Hoang Van San, a Tay ethnic man, is also the founder of Hoang San Homestay in Hoanh Mo Commune, Binh Lieu District. He is an outstanding example of successfully applying digital technology in developing tourism.
Talking to a reporter from Nhan Dan Newspaper, Hoang San said that he has been utilising social networks to boost his business since 2018. Before running the homestay, he worked as a tour guide and often used Facebook to share about the beautiful scenery and culture of Binh Lieu. Through his photos and video clips on his personal Facebook account, which has 4,900 friends, San is known by many people who have asked for his support during their visit to Binh Lieu.
The application of technology has greatly supported his business. San said that although his homestay is not located on the main road but in a high mountain border area, it is known by many tourists via social networks. “If you type the keywords “homestay Binh Lieu” on Google, the first result will show information about my homestay,” San said.
San’s effective application of digital technology on his business is shown through specific numbers: “Since September, my homestay has been full of guests on weekends. Through Facebook and Zalo accounts, I have received bookings from about 200-300 guests, but the homestay currently only meets about 1/3 of the total number”.
San added that like his family, accommodation and service establishments in Binh Lieu District have often received attention from the Quang Ninh Provincial Department of Tourism and instructions on digital transformation in tourism. “Currently, we use QR codes and Zalo codes and paste codes in locations where guests can easily see them for easy contact, payment or looking for information about the homestay”, noted San.
Over many years, Binh Lieu District has paid attention to supporting training programmes and providing direct guidance to local people on digital transformation, as well as encouraging young people to promote local tourism on social platforms, with many followers such as YouTube and TikTok.
In addition, Binh Lieu has coordinated with telecommunications units, especially Viettel, to install BTS stations to cover all tourist destinations, localities in remote areas, the western region of Binh Lieu, and tourist landmarks 1302 and 1305.
Recounting the journey to climb the ‘dinosaur spine’ in Binh Lieu, Khanh Linh said the tourism activities in Binh Lieu are now very convenient, not only thanks to the roads but also "convenient for check-in".
"Even on the ‘dinosaur's spine’, we can immediately post photos on Facebook and Instagram because the 4G signal is very strong”, said Khanh Linh.
According to a report from Binh Lieu District, 100% of villages have been connected with fibre-optic cable. The district has been continuing to strengthen links, cooperation, propaganda and the development of the tourism market. The promotion methods have been carried out simultaneously on social networking platforms and the information cooperation has been promoted on the infrastructure of Ivivu, Vietravel and Saigontourist, as well as big channels such as YouTube and TikTok.
The district determined that digital transformation is the fastest method to bring Binh Lieu tourism closer to tourists.
According to a survey, the Facebook account "Binh Lieu Tourism" of the Binh Lieu District Tourism Office, currently has 13,000 followers. The page has regularly updated images and video clips on the natural and cultural beauty of Binh Lieu, as well as tourism and cultural activities and events of the district and province.
Specifically, if visitors want to find details about attractions and accommodation information in Binh Lieu, they only need to scan the QR code displayed on the cover photo of this account.
Thanks to the rapid application of digital transformation in tourism in parallel with the improvement of transportation infrastructure, the natural beauty and culture of the Binh Lieu border area is becoming increasingly pervasive, attracting more and more tourists.
During and immediately after the epidemic (2020-2022), the number of tourists coming to Binh Lieu decreased, estimated at 197,500 (including 73,990 arrivals of staying guests), while revenue from tourism activities was estimated at 96 billion VND. However, from the first quarter of 2023, the number of visitors increased significantly, estimated at 14,780 arrivals, equal to 519% over the same period last year (4,200 staying guests, equal to 339% over the same period); and revenue from tourism was estimated at 7.6 billion VND, equal to 497% over the same period.
Despite being at the forefront of the country with many difficulties caused by the terrain, with its acumen in applying technology to tourism activities, it can be said that Binh Lieu is a typical example of the application of digital transformation to the rapid recovery of Quang Ninh tourism.
CATCHING THE TREND OF TOUCHLESS TRAVEL
Implementing Resolution No. 09-NQ/TU (February 5, 2022) of the Provincial Party Standing Committee on comprehensive digital transformation of Quang Ninh Province to 2025, with an orientation to 2030; keeping pace with the "touchless" travel trend in the new context, the Quang Ninh tourism industry has identified digital transformation as an inevitable direction, a key task that must focus on rapid deployment so the province's tourism industry can make breakthroughs and achieve sustainable development.
Deputy Director in charge of Quang Ninh Department of Tourism Nguyen Huyen Anh shared that “Quang Ninh has determined that digital transformation in tourism is a very important task, a long-term, persistent process. Digital transformation in tourism must be carried out synchronously, from agencies, to businesses and communities participating in tourism activities.”
Digital transformation has truly become a new development driving force for tourism in Quang Ninh. In recent times, a number of agencies in the province have been actively conducting digital transformation at all levels, bringing convenience and impressive experiences to tourists such as Quang Ninh Museum, Ha Long Bay, Co To District, Quan Lan, and others.
It is worth mentioning that Quang Ninh has applied technology to the display of artifacts: building a virtual museum model, implementing electronic ticket systems, and offering online information lookup and digital tourist maps.
The official websites of Quang Ninh tourism are “halongtourism.com.vn” and “halongtourism.info”. The province’s social network accounts on tourism are always updated in three languages (Vietnamese, English, and Chinese) and feature many new images and video clips on Quang Ninh tourism.
The Provincial Tourism Department is also operating and perfecting the Quang Ninh tourism digital map with basic features such as: online booking instructions, scheduled bus reservations, and a hotline to support and receive comments from tourists.
Quang Ninh identifies digital transformation in tourism as a very important task as well as a long-term and persistent process. Digital transformation in tourism must be carried out synchronously with the involvement of both agencies, businesses, and communities participating in tourism activities.
In Ha Long City, paper tickets to tourist attractions in Ha Long Bay have been replaced by electronic invoices integrated with tickets for both same-day and overnight tourists.
Compared to his first time visiting Ha Long Bay in 2000, Franko from Germany said: “Returning to Ha Long Bay this time, I see that the quality of service has changed completely in a more scientific and civilised manner. I do not have to wait long at the ticket purchasing booth. I also like the electronic invoices integrated with sightseeing tickets that clearly feature the route in English, which is very convenient to keep track of the schedule.”
The Ha Long Bay Management Board evaluates that this integrated system not only helps simplify the procedures for tourists for a complete journey, but also creates convenience for tourism management agencies.
Accordingly, this system allows organisations, individuals, and tourists to retrieve receipts for tickets to visit Ha Long Bay, helping state management agencies inspect, supervise, and conveniently and quickly inspect when requested. At the same time, the e-invoicing system helps support management agencies in reporting revenue on fee collection and passenger service collection, through ports, transmitting data directly to tax management agencies, contributing to improving efficiency and budget management performance.
Not only at the destination of Ha Long Bay, but currently many famous tourist destinations in Quang Ninh Province have digitised tourist information, digitised destinations, and attached QR codes to serve tourists looking up information, consulting and choosing a suitable destination.
Notably, since September 2022, the province has built the "Ha Long City Travel Guide", on a digital platform, with a fixed QR code, providing complete, accurate and official information about Ha Long tourism.
Statistics from the Quang Ninh Department of Tourism show that currently, the entire province has nearly 200 out of 370 sightseeing destinations, landscapes, and relics in 13 localities, with information digitised using QR codes.
According to the Quang Ninh Department of Tourism, in the coming time, the province's tourism industry will continue to promote digital transformation, and first of all, focus resources and coordinate with agencies and units, to build a digital tourism data warehouse in the province. In particular, to continue to improve the experience for tourists, Quang Ninh is striving to digitise and attach QR codes at 100% of red addresses, and historical and cultural relics in the area. Tourists and residents can visit and learn destination information easily, reducing dependence on tour guides.
Throughout the entirety of Quang Ninh Province, nearly 200 out of 370 sightseeing destinations, landscapes, and relics in 13 localities, have had their information digitised with QR codes.
The Provincial Department of Tourism coordinates with the information centre under the Vietnam Tourism Administration, to put into use the multi-service application "Vietnam Travel" and core digital platforms in the smart tourism ecosystem, towards nationwide unification and synchronisation of the tourism industry.
At the same time, the province will deploy tools and means to support tourists and tourism businesses in applying for non-cash payments on the Smart Travel Card system, under the Vietnamese card - one national card digital ecosystem, approved by the Prime Minister.
The department will implement the national digital platform “Tourism Management and Business” to support regulators and tourism businesses; implement a unified electronic ticketing system at tourist attractions and recreational facilities in Quang Ninh Province; and promote and sell the province’s tourism products and services in the Vietnam Tourism Yellow Pages.
In addition to adopting digital transformation for tourist services, the provincial Department of Tourism has also worked closely with the relevant sides to promote digital transformation in administrative procedures and destination management.
According to the Deputy Director of the Quang Ninh Tourism Department, all 26 administrative procedures under its jurisdiction can now be conducted entirely online, ensuring openness and transparency in facilitating businesses, organisations and individuals involved in the tourism sector. The department’s information portal is also active for providing and exchanging information between regulators, enterprises, people and tourists.
Along with stepping up digital transformation in administrative reform and promotion on digital media platforms, the Tourism Department also supported tourism companies to boost the development of e-commerce.
To date, all tourism companies and agencies in Quang Ninh have launched their websites or social media pages for promotion activities; used online payment accounts to conduct e-commerce transactions and accept cashless payment methods. Business performance data are also reported to the regulators via the web.
In the future, the Tourism Department will continue enhancing connectivity between tourism service companies and technology service providers to develop products appropriate for their needs, thus helping to increase service quality and develop sustainable tourism products.
